The Saints visited Newcastle this afternoon and came away with a convincing 3-0 win. A good team performance gained Hay the 3 points with all the goals coming in the 2nd half when playing down the notorious Newcastle slope.
Hay were on top for most of the 1st half without really creating many chances. Mike Havard went close in a goal mouth scramble after a good Gavin Williams free kick and Ron Snedden fired over from 25 yards when a ball slipped in to Mike Ward who was free in the box might have been the better option. Snedden created havoc with the young Newcastle defender who was marking him and Tom Weaver had a good half with some good touches in midfield. Newcastle did have a couple of chances however these were dealt with by Bryan Kirkham in goal.
The 2nd half started like a dream for the Saints with Mike Ward, Gavin Williams and Phil Davies combining to put Tom Weaver in against the keeper after a great run and he finished in style. Ater 5 minutes Hay were 2 up when Mike Havard broke in to the box and was blocked by 2 defenders Rob Snedden fought for the ball and the ball broke to Mike Ward who finished from 3 yards.
Newcastle were really struggling up the hill with Stuart Davies standing out in the Hay defence in which was an excellent overall performance from the Saints at the back. Rob Snedden was not finished though when he chased a ball in to the box which the Newcastle keeper was favourite for. Rob pinched the ball off him was chased by the keeper who was then put on his backside by a dummy. He then cut in past a defender and steered the ball home from 10 yards past 2 defenders on the line.
A good result for Hay against difficult opponents paticularly at there own ground.
