Once again The Saints and Penparcau were in an epic battle which saw 11 goals scored but this time it was the visitors who went away smiling after Mattie Davies’ second half break away goal was enough to seperate the two sides and give them all three points.

Penparcau came out for the start of the game the much brighter of the two sides dominating the early exchanges but it was The Saints striker Kevin Jones who had the first real chance in the 8th minute when he went on solo run and cut in from the right and shot just inces wide of the goal, the dangerous Mattie Davies went close in the 10th minute for Arky but he too shot wide.

The next 22 minutes left The Saints players and supporters shell shocked, a Wayne Gornal corner saw Captain Jon Foligno power home a header to open the scoring, Gornals’ brother Mike then  caused all sorts of problems down the right and helped create several more chances for Arky which they took with ease, Davies getting the second on 17 minutes, in the 20th minute it was 0-3, 34th minute 0-4 and Arky went 0-5 in the 37th minute.

The Saints could have pulled a goal back in the 35th minutes after a Gareth Jenkins cross saw striker Josh Wisniewskis’ get on the end of it but his lob which beat the keeper but his effort landed on the roof of the net.

Penparcau seemed to sit back once the 5th goal went in and found themselves under pressure for the first time in the game, right on the stroke of half time an inch perfect Sam Mayglothling throughball to Kevin Jones saw the striker smash the ball past the visiting keeper to make the half time score 1-5.

Manager Fil Wisniewski tore into his side at the break asking them to stand up and be counted.

It took just 3 minutes for a response, a Ben Bevan deep cross found Gareth Jenkins whose headed goal made it 2-5, more Saints pressure made Arky drop deeper into their own half and in the 59th minute a Sam Powell pass found Jenkins on the overlap who in turn crossed into the box for Wisniewski who scored our second.

The Saints defence though were having to be on full alert with Mattie Davies now playing a lone striker role after team mate Mikey Gornal was shown a red for a two footed tackle on Jenkins, Davies looking dangerous on the break and it was the striker who gave the visitors some breathing space with a well taken breakaway goal to make it 3-6 after 70 minutes.

Instead of dropping their heads the home team went on the attack from the kick off and it took just 5 minutes to pull another goal back, this time a Jones cross found strike partner Wisniewski who scored at the back post from an acute angle to make 4-6 with 15 minutes to go. Further chances went begging, Bevan, S.Davies and Jones all had chances to score, in the 81st minutes it really did look like The Saints would get a point after Foligno headed into his own net under pressure from a Chris Preece cross which made the score 5-6. There was a couple more goal mouth scrambles with Stu Davies going close but the ball got stuck in the mud in the now heavy pitch. The final whistle went to the relief of The Arky players and management. FT 5-6.

A strange game indeed, I’ve not seen our first team play so bad in those opening 37 minutes for a very long time, after that we can take a lot of positives as we scored 5 goals against the league leaders and played some real good football. Mattie Davies was without doubt the difference between the two sides on the day, it’s no wonder he’s the leagues top scorer.

Team- Steve Price, Gareth Jenkins(Ollie Cook), Chris Preece, Wes Evans, Phil Davies(c), Ben Bevan, Sam Mayglothling, Steve Goodwin(Stu Davies), Sam Powell(Tom Weaver), Kevin Jones, Josh Wisniewski.
