Saints 0 Westfields 2.
July 16th, 2010The Saints went down 0-2 to a strong Westfields side tonight in their first pre season friendly.
A goal just before half time and a break away in the 65th minute saw the visitors take the spoils.
Although The Saints had a lot of defending to do the visitors didn’t really have a lot of chances on goal due the homeside being so well organised. Stuart Davies won a lot tackles in the first period as did Preece and Havard at the back who time after time broke down Westfields attacks. Youngsters Jack Brereton and Steve Goodwin both had good games in the middle against very experienced and highly rated players.
Kevin Jones and Josh Wisniewki linked up well in the 20th minute with Jones seeing a snap shot saved by the visiting keeper. Just as The Saints thought they were going in at half time at 0-0 The Westfield number 9 latched onto a throughball and rounded keeper Ian Jones to put them 0-1 up at the break. Ht 0-1
The second period saw The Saints get on top early on, John Daw came on for Jones and played very well linking up with Wisniewski and Gavin Williams who was a shock starter after a long term injury, Mike Havard saw his long range free kick just go over the bar, up the other end Ian Jones tipped a 30 yarder over the bar. Westfields made it 0-2 after a quick counter attack with the ball finally being side footed into the net from a striker who looked in an offside position .
With 15 to go Daw saw his header from a Williams corner come crashing back off the bar, Jones also went close with a 20 yard effort which beat the keeper but went inches wide of the post.
This was a good work out for the players against a very good side who play in a lot higher standard than us. The team looked very well organised on the night and caused our visitors problems on times. The whole squad put a good shift in but if I have to pick one individual out that would be Chris Preece who didn’t put a foot wrong all night.
