Llandrindod Reserves 4-2 Saints Reserves

Dan Jones’s Saints Reserves went down 4-2 at Lant Field in an entertaining Mid Wales South encounter. Paul Ward-Willis had handed the Saints the lead before Dod turned it round, going into the break ahead by a single goal. Mid-way through the second-half, Alex Simmonds’ goal bought proceedings level but two quick fire strikes handed the home side the three points.

Hay took the lead early in the game when good work in the midfield from Kevin Goodwin saw him slip a through ball to Ward-Willis who poked the ball past the ‘keeper. Llandod were level soon after though when a deflected shot was saved by the foot of Mike Ward but a follow up effort was easily slotted away. Llandod found themselves ahead after a cross from the left was headed up in the air, but it fell to their striker who smashed a volley past Ward. Hay had a couple of chances to go level before the break, with Dave Evans firing wide after superbly being put in by Gary Keeble, and Goodwin’s control and long-range volley was well held by the ‘keeper.

Hay started the second-half positively but were struggling to create any clear cut chances against the hosts. Instead, Dod pushed forward with one effort striking the bar and another shot from the same player narrowly missing the bottom corner. However, Hay were to draw level when excellent work down the right-wing from Josh Davies saw him fire a dangerous ball across the six yard box where Simmonds was well-placed to divert into the back of the net. This had followed an excellent run from left-back by Simmonds, as he used his pace to get away from the defensive challenges before cutting into the box but a left-foot scooped effort hit the outside of the post. The goalscorer though turned villain soon after when he conceded a soft penalty for handball. This was powerfully finished by Dod’s left-winger. Any hopes of getting back into the game were subsequently ended when a direct pass over the top was finished by the striker, who lobbed over the onrushing Ward.

Dan Jones was pleased with his teams efforts in the match, on a very sticky pitch. He picked out all of the defensive back-line for performing well, with the man of the match award going to Simmonds for his efforts. Next up for the Saints is a home game, against Knighton Town.
