Saints Through to Quarter Final.

Hay St Mary’s won 4-3 this afternoon against Knighton Town in the league cup.

The Saints found themselves 1-0 up after 20 seconds when Rob Snedden volleyed in  from 20 yards after a poor clearance from the Knighton centre back, the lead was soon cancelled out when the visitors were awarded a penalty after a Rory Hackett push in the area.

The homeside dominated the rest of the half, Tom Weaver finished well to make it 2-1 then Gavin Williams danced his was through a crowd of players before scoring with a low right foot effort to make it 3-1, Stu Davies hit two 30 yard efforts over the bar and Williams and Snedden both hit the post as the Saints laid siege to the Knighton goal.

The same pattern of play followed at the start of the second period and within two minutes of the restart an inch perfect Johnny Daw through ball found Snedden out wide left, the striker cut in and lobbed the keeper to put the homeside 4-1 up and that seemed game set and match.

The game came to life again with 9 minutes to go when Connor Bird was first to react after Josh Davies pulled off a wonder save, the striker making it 4-2 and what seemed at the time a consolation goal, with 4 minutes to go Chris Preece brought down Bird and another penalty was awarded and dispatched with ease for 4-3, panic now set in and in the last minute Knighton got the ball in the net again only for the referee to give a foul for a push on Josh Davies, to be fair there wasn’t many complaints from the visitors, the final whistle went with the score at 4-3.

I felt we were totally dominant for 80 minutes and then panicked when they scored their second, a good team performance against a good Knighton side, although it is hard to pick out one individual I thought Rob Snedden looked a real handful today and made two difficult goals look easy, the fitter he gets the better he will get.
