The opening minutes saw Northcote on top, playing with the wind behind them they put the Saints back four under pressure but this was dealt with and in the 9th minute it was the Saints who had the first chance of the game when Levi Phillips broke from the half way line but just as he was about to pull the trigger Gareth Price made a last ditch tackle to deny him.

In the 11th minute the big Northcote number 7 was in on goal after a mazy run however, his shot was well saved by Cellan Davies in the Hay goal, a minute later Northcote were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box after a silly trip by a Hay defender but the free kick was wasted. The 7 for Northcote was causing more and more problems but was guilty of trying to do too much when his team mates were in good positions and a pass would have been a better option.

The pacey Tomi Lewis broke down the right and whipped in a cross for striker Joe Winfield but again Price was there with a covering tackle, Northcote immediately counter attacked and only a brilliant double save from Davies in the Hay goal stopped them from opening the scoring.

Winger Kyle Harding in action

With half time approaching both sides had shouts for a penalty turned down, first a Northcote player was clipped in the box then just a minute later a Kyle Harding shot hit the hand of Price in the Northcote defence, the referee wasn’t interested in either appeal.

Davies came to the rescue again after the ball fell to the number 7 after Andrew Barrell had made a good tackle, the keeper bravely dived at the midfielders feet, luckily the ball spilled out for a corner.

Up the other end Harding who was now causing problems with his pace found himself one on one with the Northcote keeper who produced a top notch save to deny the winger, on the stroke of half time Keigan Powell put Harding through on goal but again the keeper saved well. Half time 0-0

Hay came out confident at the start of the second half and nearly took the lead, Harding broke down the right, his first time cross found Lewis but the ball went inches wide from the wingers header.

Northcote responded by beating the offside trap but Levi Phillips sprinted back and made a good tackle to deny the number 10 a shot.

The opening goal of the game came in the 8th minute of the second half, Hwyl Jones won the ball and laid it off to big centre half Jacob Evans, his throughball caused panic in the Northcote defence and the first to respond was winger Lewis who smashed it in from close range for 1-0 to Hay.

Northcote looked like they were going to equalise just 3 minutes later but Davies pulled off the save of the game tipping the number 7’s thunderbolt effort over the bar.

Connor Lewis, Will Workman and Evans along with Andrew Barrell were having to make countless tackles which in turn restricted Northcote to long range efforts, however, in the 60th minute everyone just looked on as a Northcote cross beat Davies and then rolled along the goal line until Lewis cleared it, a let off for the young Saints.

Down the other end Lewis and Harding’s pace had Northcote panicking on numerous occassions but that second goal was hard to come by.

During another Northcote attack which was stopped on the edge of the area with a strong tackle by Evans, the defender quickly passed out wide to Barrell who was overlapping on the right, his first time cross was met by substitute Cory Pudner the striker making no mistake from close range to put the Saints 2-0 up.

With just five minutes left the Saints youngsters thought the cup was won, whilst they were thinking that Northcote had gone up the field and gained a corner, from the resulting a corner the tall centre half headed powerfully past Davies to pull it back to 2-1, just as the nerves were about to start in the Hay camp the refereee blew up for full time.

Final score Hay St Mary’s 2 Northcote Colts 1.

Coaches and squad.

I would like to congratulate the team on a great win on the night, it was a close game and the result could of gone either way, it was the Saints determination that won it in the end. Also well done to Tiny Harding and his assistant Andrew Harris, I know Tiny has put in a lot of hours over the years with this group of lads, so well done mate.

Gareth Price of Northcote was awarded the man of the match award from representatives from the South Powys league, I totally agree with that, although Hay keeper Cellan Davies pushed him all the way in my opinion. The Hay coaching team wanted a special mention for Andrew Barrell and Jacob Evans who also played very well on the night.
