Away Win.

The Saints put in their worst performance of the season but managed to come away with all three points against a young Newbridge side.

A Tom James hat-trick and a Brendan Hackett goal won it for the visitors who trailed 3-2 with eight minutes to go, top scorer Kevin Jones looks to be out for at least 4 weeks after turning his ankle at the end of the game.

Hat-trick hero Tom James.

The Saints found themselves 1-0 down yesterday after three minutes without hardly touching the ball, the home side  knocked it around from the kick off and were awarded a free kick 25 yards out after a clumsy challenge, Josh Davies saved but Marco Parry reacted quickest and thumped the ball in from close range 1-0.

With just five minutes on the clock it was 1-1, Chris Preece won the ball in midfield and played a cross field pass to Tom James, James came onto the ball and hit it first time from 30 yards out, the ball bent into the top right hand corner of the net giving the home keeper no chance.

The next 35 minutes were very scrappy, The Saints were struggling to put two passes together, however, they did have a couple of good one on one chances after beating the offside trap but the keeper saved with ease, Brendan Hackett also went close after beating two men on a run from the half way line but again the keeper saved. I was speaking with the Newbridge stand in manager and he said “we need half-time to come quickly”, a minute later in a rare Newbridge attack their number 8 (Sam Hope) hit a left footed shout from 25 yards which took a deflection off Adam Finn and flew into the net, Newbridge held the lead going into the break 2-1.

Saints manager Tom Weaver was not a happy man at half-time and a few harsh words were spoken, it looked to have paid off in the 52 minute, Daw released Hackett who then rounded the keeper and walked the ball into the back of the net 2-2.

Back came Newbridge on the hour mark, a cross from the right was met by Fenn Wilson who put a bullet of a header past Davies from 16 yards out 3-2.

The game became scrappy again, there were a couple of chances at both ends, Newbridge were unlucky with one which went just over the bar.

In the 81st minute it was 3-3, Chris Preece burst into the area and cut the ball back for James who made no mistake from close range. At this point there was only one team going to win it and the goal came in the 85th minute, Jamie Howard cut inside in the centre of the park and threaded a lovely pass to Goodwin who in turn fed the overlapping Hackett, the midfielder saw his shot saved but there was that than man James on hand to blast in the rebound to claim his hat-trick and hand the three points to the visitors.

FT 3-4

The drama wasn’t over yet, Kevin Jones rolled his marker and sprinted into the box as he pulled the trigger his foot went from under him which resulted in a trip(no pun intended) to A and E and it looks like a lengthy spell on the side lines with ankle ligament damage for The Saints top scorer.. Ft 3-4.

The manager knew we were short today but still felt we had enough to win against a youthful Newbridge side whose average is 19(plus Broomy!), we did win but we were poor and nicked 3 points by the skin of our teeth. The only person who really looked like he wanted it bad was Steve Jones who stood in from the Sunday side, he was determined and aggressive throughout, Weaver nominated him as the gaffers man of the match. We will really need to  up our game if we want to come away from Knighton with anything. Another plus was Tom James who netted a well taken hat-trick in his first start of the season.
