Under 16’s Through to Final.

The Saints under 16 side are through to a South Powys league final after a close 5-4 victory over Newbridge-On-Wye.

The game was played in very wet and windy conditions at Forest Road on Saturday morning.

The home side dominated the early stages and it wasn’t long before they went 1-0 up from a Levi Phillips goal. Kyle Harding made it 2-0 direct from his well taken corner. Lots more chances went begging but the Saints did go in at the break 3-0 up after a goal by Tommi Lewis, manager Tiny Harding was more than happy at this stage, a 3 goal lead and his side had played their best football of the season so far.

Things were about to change and what a difference 15 minutes make, with the wind at their backs Newbridge rolled their sleeves up and put lots of pressure on the defence and  before they knew it the score was 3-3. Harding made a few tactical changes which worked because his son Kyle made it 4-3 after scoring a brave header and getting a punch in the head for his troubles. Soon after Ty Garrard went on a solo run and scored a great goal to make it 5-3, however, there was no time to relax as the visitors went up the other end and made it 5-4, two of their goals coming from the penalty spot. It was now squeaky bum for everyone involved but man of the match Andrew Barrell and the rest of the defence held firm in the awful conditions to win a nine goal thriller.

Saints coach Tiny Harding was one very happy man after the win, he said this will be our fourth final in four years, the boys had to dig deep but we deserved it over the 90 minutes.
