The Sunday Saints lost 3-1 this afternoon to Newcastle in The Alfred Sparey Cup.
Hay started the better in this tie and took the lead after ten minutes. Steve Goodwin received the ball in midfield. With options limited, he spotted Ben Harvey off his line and chipped him from more than 40 yards. Five minutes later, Newcastle were back on level terms. A cross beat everyone but caught on the far post and bounced into the net. The rest of the half was even with chances limited although Harvey did make one fine save from a mid-range effort. Another vicious shot flew over Harvey’s crossbar and bounced on the bonnet of a car parked behind the goal. The impact caused the windscreen to break. HT 1-1
The 2nd half continued in the same vain as the 1st but Newcastle gradually took control. Newcastle took the lead just before the hour mark. Good play in midfield saw the ball played out wide to Craig Morris whose perfect cross was met first time by the onrushing Tom Bright who applied a powerful finish from 10 yards. The score was soon 3-1 with Jamie Blythe bundling the ball over the line from a corner.
