Saturday Saints 5 Sunday Saints 2.

The Ron Ellis cup was won by the Saturday Saints by 5 goals to 2. The first 20 minutes were very even with the Sunday having the first good chance when John Sly was put through one on one with keeper Kirkham but Sly put his shot wide. Gavin Williams opened the scoring after 20 minutes after being put in by Chris Preece. Kevin Jones then made the second after some great footwork down the left he crossed and found Preece at the back post who finished well past keeper Ian Jones. Rob  Snedden made it 3-0 just before half-time when a clearance fell to him about 20 yards out and he fired it back past the stranded Davies. Kirkham had to be alert and make a good save tipping round a Graeme Keeble long range effort.

The second half was more Saturday Saints preesure with the Sunday Saints looking to hit them on the break with Sly’s pace. Kirkham made another great save from a snapshot from a Sunday Saint midfielder which he tipped over the bar. A mistake led to Kevin Jones making it 4-0 and with 20 minutes to go Michael Ward had a tap in for 5-0. Instead of laying down the Sunday team hit back with two quick goals from Mike Price, the first was made by man of the match Chris Mills and the second was a great finish after a long kick by Davies.

A great final was enjoyed by all players and a very large crowd. Chris Mills was awarded the man of the match which was by presented by Ron Ellis’ great grandson Matthew Tong.
