Saints Reserves reach Sparey Cup Final

Saints Reseves reached the Sparey Cup Final yesterday at Presteigne when they beat Kington Reserves 3-2.

A good first half performance proved enough against a young hardworking Kington side as they lead 3-0 at half time. They were  nearly made to pay though for a lazy second half when Kington deservedly scored 2.

Within 3 minutes of the start the Saints took the lead when a right wing free kick from Mike Ward deceived the Kington keeper and went in at the far post. Within two minutes Liam Pugh put Ollie Cooke in on goal however,he was not able to get his shot on target. More pressure followed and on 18 minutes this paid off when a Garry Keeble inswinging corner was contested by both Alex Winstone and Toby Johnson, with the youngster heading home from close in for his first senior goal.

Kington were making the Saints work with their no 10 Davies and 7 Williams always lively, although there were no really clear cut chances to bother Richard Sullivan in goal. Another impressive start was made by central defender Doman who made crucial tackles on a number of occasions.

Hay continued to press for further goals and Tom Wilkes wandered in from the left to hit a good right foot shot just over. The half finished with Johnny Daw having three chances in quick succession. The first two he created himself and the keeper made a smart save down to his right for the first and the second was driven home from near the penalty spot. Gavin Williams from left back created the third with a probing run down the left and a good cross which Daw just failed to finish. HT 3-0.

The second half started poorly for the Saints with a mistake letting in striker Davies for a goal which his work rate deserved. A good move down the left between Gav and Wilko saw Gav pull the ball back for Daw who again failed to convert the chance. Another move down the left this time between Johnny and Will Goodwin resulted in a chance for Cookie which again went begging.

The Saints were continuing to make chances but there was no real energy in the second half performance which allowed Kington a foothold in the game. They did not though cause any real problems for Sulli in goal.

Further chances were created when a Keeble corner was again attacked by both Toby and Winnie and both of them just failing to get that decisive touch. Will Goodwin played in Wilko and Johnny and Jacko Thomas linked with Johnny again just failing with the final touch. Right in the last few minutes Kington had a corner and the ball was bundled over the line to make the final score 3-2. It was a good job that the second was not scored until late on as the Saints could have paid for their wasteful finishing.

Congratulations to the squad and H for reaching the final where they will meet local rivals Gwernyfed on Sunday the 17th May at Presteigne with a 2.30 kick off.
