First Team Win at Home.

The First Team put in a strong performance today to beat title chasing Berriew FC 2-0.

.

Top scorer Brendan Hackett netted a goal in each half

Due to the top pitch being under water the game was played on the second pitch.

We started bright knocking the ball around and pressing the visitors into making mistakes, however, it was Berriew who had the first chance with a header which went over the bar.

Our first chance of the afternoon came from a Rob Snedden cross which Jack Biggs just headed over the bar,  minutes later captain Brendan Hackett was inches away from heading in another Snedden cross at the back post.

The break through came in the 29th minute when Snedden burst into the area this time from the left wing position and was bundled over giving referee Chris Corfield no option other than pointing to the penalty spot. Top scorer Hackett scored even though the keeper guessed the right way. 1-0

A long range effort from a Berriew midfielder went inches over the bar, up the other end the impressive Steve Goodwin also saw his effort go over the bar after a good run into the box.

The half finished with another Biggs effort going just wide. Ht 1-0

Centre half Matt Croose had the first effort of the second half but saw his volley well blocked by a Berriew defender.

Berriew came more into the game in the second half, firstly a shot from the edge of the area went over the bar. Saints keeper Jordan Baker then made a good save from a close range effort on the hour to keep us 1-0 up.

Man of the match Matt James who seemed to be everywhere saw his effort on goal saved after a short corner move. Hackett doubled the lead after a good run into the area saw him fire a shot through the keepers leg. 2-0

In the 72nd minute Berriew hit the bar and the ball was cleared to safety, down the other end Steve Morgan saw his shot from the left go inches wide of the post.

The visitors piled on the pressure in the last ten minutes but our defence was outstanding all game and well supported by James and Stu Davies. The visitors saw a shot fly across the goal mouth and a minute later Baker tipped a long range effort over the bar.

There were no more chances as the referee blew for full time.

Ft 2-0

An impressive team performance against a very good side who play football the right way. Berriew manager Dave Jones has built a good young side who like to pass the ball on the floor. We pressed them well all game to try to stop them passing it around and it worked well. Our defence looked good today against the leagues two top scorers limiting them to long range efforts.
