Saints Cause Cup Upset.

The Saints knocked higher graded Radnor Valley FC out of the league cup tonight after a thrilling 4-3 win.

Goal scorers were Matty Tong(2), Greg Preece and Brendan Hackett.

Forest Road: MMP with Norman Lloyd Mid Wales League Cup First Round

Hay St Mary’s striker Matty Tong put a snap shot wide of the near post before heading home past Adam Jones just a minute later following an inviting cross swung into the near post area from out on the right flank courtesy of midfilder Brendan Hackett.( 1-0)

The Goats responded with an equaliser in the 16th minute,Callum Davies delivered a dangerous cross which saw the subsequent shot thud off the underside of the crossbar before Joey Price’s mishit effort beat Tom Bevan in the home goal.(1-1)

Brendan Hackett saw his 20 yard free-kick narrowly clear the Radnor Valley crossbar four minutes later before Tong struck a fine bicycle  kick into the botttom corner of the net to regain the lead for the Saints after a cross from Jack Biggs. (2-1)

The Breconshire club extended their advantage in the 32nd minute when Greg Preece robbed Elliot Williams of possession and sprinted towards the visitor’s goal before firing his effort into the back of the net.(3-1)

The Goats responded just two minutes later to halve the deficit in this cracking cup tie, the ball was bundled home from a corner to put Radnor Valley right back into the game. (3-2)

Jack Williams went close with a long range effort but Hay St Mary’s regained their two-goal advantage on the stroke of half time. Tong saw a shot on target saved by Adam Jones  after being set-up by Preece, Tong then laid it back to Hackett was on hand to rifle the ball home from the edge of the penalty area after the Radnor Valley defence failed to clear the ball properly.(4-2)

Veteran striker Geraint Lloyd saw his chipped effort save by Bevan in stoppage time before Ieuan Price struck an effort across goal before Eddie Pryce’s whistle sounded

Bevan was forced to stretch to save a speculative lob from just over 30 yards out in the 54th minute before Geraint Lloyd reduced the deficit further two minutes later after heading home a cross from the right from Liam Jones.

Biggs fired an effort wide of goal in the 61st minute, following a neat move by the Saints, before Preece headed wide from a corner only a minute latter.

Adam Jones was forced to turn Preece’s dipping half-volley on to the crossbar in the 76th minute. Despite pressure from the Goats during the closing stages, they were unable to pierce their local rivals goal on a fourth occasion and force an additional 30 minutes of playing time.

A brilliant performance from us against a very good side who are having their best season to date in  the Mid Wales league div 1. Every player put in a good shift to help us progress to the next round.
