Sunday Saints progress to Semis.

The Saints won 8-6 after extra time.

The Sunday Saints started slow and found themselves 2-0 down after 20 minutes. Hay were playing into a gale force wind in the first half and were struggling to get out of their own half. John Sly received the ball on the half way line and went on a mazy run and finished well to make the score 2-1 with 10 minutes of the half left. HWX then went down the field and scored a 30 yard screamer to make it 3-1. On the stroke of half time Kevin Jones went around the full back and crossed for Wayne Evans to score to make it 3-2 to HWX at half time.

The Saints now had the wind in their favour and within 1 minute of the kick off Gareth Jenkins went around the full back and crossed for Jones to finish from close range. Hay took their foot off the pedal and the away side looked the more likely to score and sure enough with 20 to go their lively striker made it 4-3. The game was now end to end with the Saints throwing men forward to try and equalise. HWX broke away and got a penalty with 3 minutes to go which they put away but the referee disallowed it and awarded a free kick to Hay becuase they had players in the box when it was taken. The free kick was taken quickly up to Jones who flicked on to Dan jones who went in brave on the keeper and nipped it past him to make it 4-4.  FT 4-4.

HWX played with the wind in the first half of extra time and scored two quick goals to go in at the break 6-4 up with The Saints looking a beaten side.

The Saints needed a quick goal to stand any chance of going through and it came within 2 minutes of kick off when John Sly got his second to make it 6-5 to HWX. The Saints were piling the pressure on now, a Liam Pugh header was blocked on the line and Jenko was hand to blast in 6-6. A long ball from the back left Kev Jones and their keeper going for a bouncing high ball, Jones strength won the battle and as he got his head to it first flattening the keeper in a fair but hard challenge. 7-6 to the Saints. Hay then had Captain Liam Pugh sent off for a second bookable offence. The referee managed to book about 8 Hay players and send one off. Instead of panicking with 5 to go The Saints changed the system to go with one striker and this paid off when Dan Jones broke down the left and scored his 2nd and Hays 8th. Final score 8-6 saints.

This game was end to end from start to finish and we were always chasing until the last 10 of extra time. the referee spoilt it by dishing out cards at every challenge to our team and not theirs. Like the first team yesterday I can’t pick out any individual so the whole team would get the man of the match award.
