Saints Win Derby.

The Saints came away from Talgarth with all three points after a close encounter which saw the visitors go 0-2 up at half time but the homeside made it 1-2 in the first minute of the second half, however, it was the Saints who held on to win plus claim the bragging rights and do the double over their local rivals.

The first ten minutes of the match saw the two sides being very cagey with each other, not a lot of goalmouth action happened in that period. It was the visitors who then took control of the midfield and started to make inroads towards the Talgarth goal, Johhny Daw saw his shot saved by Luke Bowen, the keeper then saved at his near post from the overlapping Phil Davies. The visitors opened the scoring in the 17th minute, but not before the young keeper pulled off a double save, Gav Williams cut in from the right but  Bowen saved, Williams was the first to react and shot again only for Bowen to save again, the ball this time falling to the feet of Phil Davies who saw his shot take a deflection before it finally hit the back of the net. 0-1.

The Saints then controlled long periods of the half but saw all their efforts go wide or saved by Bowen, in the 30th minute Daw hit a shot from 22 yards out which deceived the Talgarth keeper  to make it 0-2.

Talgarth came into the game after this but wasted a couple of chances, Rob Macnamara blasting two good chances over the bar, after another Talgarth attack the Saints counter attacked, Williams was in on goal after a Kev Jones throughball but again Bowen came to Talgarths rescue saving Williams effort. ht 0-2

Within a minute of the restart Macnamara went on a mazy run and fired in from just outside the box to make 1-2 which gave the homeside a massive lift. Talgarth were now on top Macnamara shooting twice more from distance but his efforts both went wide. The Saints changed things around and began putting pressure on the homesides defence again, at this stage the game was very even with both teams having chances. With 15 minutes to go the Saints were dealt a blow when top scorer Kevin Jones was shown a second yellow for foul and abusive language and given his marching orders. The visitors dealt very well with only having ten minute, there was one scare when Talgarth player manager Gavin Perry was put through on goal, but Perry fluffed his effort and Josh Davies saved with his feet, the Saints did get the ball in the back of net towards the end of the game but the referee awarded a foul against captain Chris Preece for a push. ft 1-2

It was good to see the Saints get back to winning ways after a several weeks witout a win to their name. Manager Tom Weaver didn’t think his side played that well besides a 25 minute period in the first half, he thought Tom James had a very good game in defence but his man of the match was central midfielder Stu Davies. I thought our captain(Preecy) played very well but would have chosen younger Davies brother (Phil) as man of the match for his workrate alone.
