Saints Win Away..

The Saints played into the wind in the first half and controlled long periods with quick passing to feet, Rob Snedden had the first chance on goal but his shot went wide after being set up by Gavin Williams. Snedden was causing the Penybont back four all sorts of problems while running at them and beating his marker with ease. Jamie Howard who was playing centre midfield was fouled after 10 minutes in the area and the referee awarded the Saints a penalty. Striker Kevin Jones put the spot kick wide to the relief of the home team. It took the Saints only 2 minutes after the penalty to get their first goal when Garry Keeble burst into the box and he made no mistake from 10 yards out. At this stage of the game it was all Hay and it was Snedden who scored next after beating three men and firing his shot low past the stranded Penybont keeeper. Then came a very strange 5 minutes for the Saints, first a Penybont player hit a 25 yarder which curled into the top corner of Bryan Kirkhams goal with help from the wind and then a freekick on the edge of their box was hit long and Mike Havard sliced it into his own net. The Saints went in at half-time 2-2 after totally dominating it.  HT 2-2.

The Saints now had the wind advantage and were on top again from the off and it took just 5 minutes for Kevin Jones to get on the score sheet when he turned his marker and hit a cracking right foot shot into the bottom left hand corner of the Penybont goal. It was 4-2 on the hour when Jones took a quick throw in on the left and put the impressive Gavin Williams in on goal and he made no mistake firing the ball across the keeper. The Saints then lost their discipline when Jamie Howard who had been booked earlier for arguing with the ref was shown a second yellow for a lunge on the home teams centre half. The Saints still looked in control with 10 men but Penybont did manage to pull a goal back with 2 minutes left after a mix up in the Saints defence. The final couple of minutes the Saints kept the ball and the referee blew his whistle to end the game. FT Penybont 3 Saints 4.

The scoreline suggests this was a close game but in truth we were by far the better side and should have scored several more goals. I cannot decide who was man of the match so I asked a couple of the Saints fans and they picked Gavin Williams.
