Former Hay St Mary’s FC midfielder (and sometimes goalkeeper) is running the Cardiff half marathon for charity.

Hi everyone,

I will be running the Cardiff Half Marathon on October 5th, the charity I have chosen is Mind. This charity supports people all across the UK who unfortunately suffer from Mental Health problems, there are many reasons why I have chosen this charity, some of which I will briefly try to explain.

Some of you may or may not know, but I personally have suffered from Depression since I was 16, and the varying levels of this condition have negatively changed my life at times – however, I have managed to keep going due to the various support systems I have had at my disposal, including the NHS, School and University as well as my family and friends. I have hidden this condition in plain sight, it’s something that isn’t outwardly evident but it controls my life none the less, fortunately I am on an upward curve and have the condition under control, but others are not always as lucky.

Also, I have some close friends who also suffer from and manage various mental health problems and some who are no longer with us due to these conditions.

I personally feel that Mental Health is not looked upon in a great light within this country, it can be viewed as a weakness, laziness and lies. Subsequently, it is not always easy for people to be honest when they have these problems, for fear of being outcast or labelled.

Some people do not have access to the help and support that I have had, therefore they need to turn to charities such as Mind, and I felt that this was the best way for me to give something back and help people who find themselves in need.

I love to run, it gives me a way of switching off from the world and putting my mind to rest, and my aim is to one day run the London Marathon. So running the Cardiff Half Marathon is the first step in that process, and I know it won’t be easy but I have an amazing cause to run for and to keep going when it gets tough.

Any donations you can provide are extremely welcome, big or small, every little helps.
