Saints out of the Cup

Saints Res were facing Burghill for the second time in three weeks in this cup clash and were on the wrong end of a 5-2 defeat.

Burghill looked the more likely to score and so it proved after 15 minutes as the away striker this time beat the offside trap  finishing well past Darren Laurie in the home goal. Hay got back in to the game when Jacko Thomas forced the ball home with the keeper scrambling to keep the ball out. Half time 1-1.

The second half started with the Saints looking far livlier although they were not creating any clear openings. Again they didn’t look comfortable against the long ball with Darren in the home goal having to save on a number of occasions. Burghill made the Saints pay and soon went 3-1 up. The Saints dragged themselves back in to it with Stu Davies heading home from close range from a Chris Bounds corner. Soon after Ceri Ward went through and hit the post and this was probably the end of the game for the Saints as Burghill soon went 4-2 up. The Saints continued to push but again were caught by the away side on the as they wrapped the game up with a penalty after Stu bought down the away striker.

A disappointing result for the Saints reserves who to be fair never gave up.  They lacked  real focus up front although Jacko Thomas showed that he is learning all the time. His effort could not be questioned throughout the game. There were good performances from Garry Keeble and Ceri Ward in central midfield plus goalkeeper Darren Laurie who made some good saves and could not be faulted for any of the goals. Ben Walsh and Tom Wilkes again showed that if thay can be brought into the game more thay will cause any team problems.

Team; Darren Laurie, Alex Howard(Capt),Stu Davies,Liam Pugh(Steven Jenkins),Chris Bounds,Ben Walsh(John Sly),Ceri Ward,Garry Keeble,Tom Wilkes,Jacko Thomas, Mike Ward(Will Goodwin).
