SAINTS 5 LAMPETER TOWN 1.

The Saints hosted a strong footballing side from Lampeter Town on saturday and came away with the prize of the next round of the Central Wales Senior Challenge Cup.

We did not however, have it all our own way. The day started with the knowledge that Rob Snedden who had been suffering from the man flu for a couple of weeks and hadn’t been able to train, would probably not be fit. Otherwise a full squad was available.

As we had not been able to play for 6 weeks, it was always going to be a difficult one to call. It wasn’t long before such thoughts evapourated as Josh Wis put Ben Bevan in to score from around 8 yards with the Lampeter defence at sixes and sevens. Kevin Jones added a second minutes after Lampeter had what seemed like a good headed goal dissallowed for off side. Cries of “are you Sid Wilding in disguise ” being hurled toward the single minded Sam Powell on the line.

Lampeter did grab one back to send us into the break with something to think about. Half time 2-1

The second half like the first was full of incident, Hays strikers missing a number of opportunities to extend the lead and at one point it looked like it just wasn’t going to happen. Then the excellent Lampeter keeper cleared from the edge of his box, but only managed to find Joe Mayglothling inside the centre circle. Joe needed no more of an invitation and swiftly and with outstanding technique sent the ball over the keepers head and into the top corner of an empty net. Awesome!

This seemed to inspire the saints and Gavin Williams put Josh Wis in to score in the far corner.

Fil Wis asked for a change in formation to go 3-4-3 and brought on Johnny Daw. The last goal was down to Kevin Jones finishing from a Johnny Daw through ball. Josh Davies who replaced Joe Mac on the wing came close and this seemed to inspire Mike Havard to turn the formation around and go up front in what became a 2-4-4 formation.(a wager of 5 quid might be the reason)

In truth not a great performance but a great result. Chris Preece and Sam Mac in the middle deserve a special mention as do Lampeter Town as they always tried to play football and were unlucky to have had their 2 central defenders missing.

Now for Llandod at home on saturday in the Emrys Morgan Cup.

Team Kirkham, R Jones (Daw70min), Havard, Preece, P Davies,J Mayglothling (Davies J 65mins) , S Mayglothling, Bevan(Powell 55 mins), Williams, K Jones, Wisniewski.
