SAINTS RESERVES GO NAP.

Saints Res. had a fantastic win today beating visiting Wooferton Res 5-2 but, not without some heart stopping moments.

In the first half the visiting side had the majority of the game but didn’t really trouble stand in goalkeeper Mike Ward. Wardy made one sharp save as the ball was crossed into the box from the left but, otherwise alot of the efforts were from long range. The Saints had trouble getting out of their half playing against the wind. It was certainly the case that the forwards did not get any quality ball played up to them. With 20 minutes to go to half time the Saints made Wooferton pay when Garry Keeble broke through the midfield winning 3 or 4 tackles before passing to Will Goodwin who laid the ball on for Graeme Keeble who calmly passed the ball in to the net from 20 yards right footed. HT 1-0.

Within 5 minutes of the 2nd half the visitors were level when Wardy failed to collect a ball into the box and the away forward finished easily . Hay were not to be outdone though as Alex Winstone turned home a Gr Keeb free kick from the left at the far post. Wooferton were coming on to the Saints a little and Hays third goal came from a break with Gr Keeb picking the ball up in the middle and playing the ball forward to Charlie Jordan who flicked the ball on to Ollie Cooke. Cookie still had alot to do as 2 defenders converged on him however, he held his composure and showed great strength to finish superbly left footed past the keeper.

It looked from here as though the Saints would now go on to win the game with out too much trouble however, another soft goal was conceded.Wooferton played the ball in to the home box which wasn’t dealt with properly. The ball was played back into the goalmouth and  was smashed home at the far post by an unmarked Wooferton forward.

The home crowd were now wondering if this was going to be another story of being in a good position and not quite finishing it off. Not a chance today as Hay went on to score another 2 goals.

First of all Gaz Keeb went on a surging run through the middle, hit a good shot across the keeper who was only able to push it into the path of Gareth Jenkins who finished easily. Following this the Saints were awarded a free kick midway in to the away sides half on the right hand side. Gr Keeb took it left footed whipping it into the far post where Jenks glanced a great header past the stranded keeper. Final score 5-2.

Great battling performance today particularly in the 1st half when we struggled to get out of our own half against the wind. Once the 2nd half started playing with the wind  the game changed and the Saints drove forward and really deserved the victory.

Many thanks to Mike Ward today who stepped in to the keepers role today and did very well. Other impressive displays from the Keeb twins with Graeme scoring 1 and setting up 3 and Garry setting up 2. This display was however about the team digging in when they were not playing well and then going on to win the game. Great team effort lads.
