Saints in Romp.

The Saints beat Orleton Colts FC  8 – 0 last night in the quarter final of The Otway Cup.

Here’s a short match report of the game  –

The Saints made the perfect start, after just seven minutes of the match, when Brendan Hackett latched on to a through ball before rounding the Orleton Colts goalkeeper and turning it into an empty net. The Saints doubled their advantage nine minutes later, following a good spell of interplay in their opponent’s penalty area, which was concluded with a goal from Will Goodwin.

Two goals for Will Goodwin.

Hackett crashed a free-kick against the crossbar in the 18th minute before he was instrumental in the next goal five minutes later following a sweeping move down the right. The talismanic attacker’s cross was converted by Matt James playing in an unaccustomed defensive role.

Jack Biggs swept home a fourth goal (which was his 20th for the season) after a good move from the Saints in the 25th minute. Biggs doubled his tally 10 minutes later when he fired in a low shot from nearly 30 yards out.

Orleton Colts concluded the first-half action three minutes later when a penalty kick thundered back of the crossbar.

Both James brothers were on the scoresheet.

Happy Gaffer 7 0ut of 7 for his side.

Hay St Mary’s resumed the scoring 11 minutes after the break when Will Goodwin swept in a cross from the right before captain Stuart Davies added his name to the score sheet on the hour mark. Goodwin missed an opportunity to complete a hat-trick when he skied a 72nd minute penalty over the target but Tom James completed the scoring five minutes from time when he converted another cross from the right.

It’s tough to pick a man of the match in a performance like that but I thought Brendan Hackett was outstanding throughout.
