The Saints took an early lead after a Newcastle defender turned a Saints cross into their own net, it wasn’t long before it was 1-1 another cross from the left caused problems for Ian Jones in the Saints goal the home side managing to sqeeze the ball over the line from close range. Centre half Mike Havard made it 1-2 when he scored from an acute angle with a left foot pile driver. ht 1-2.

Newcastle were back in the game after equalising early in the second half after the Saints were caught high up the pitch and they broke the offside trap. Russell Jones made it 2-3 after scoring from a corner after going close just a minute earlier, Newcastle pushed for another equaliser but found the Saints back 4 more solid and goalkeeper Joe Mayglothling in fine form, sub Tom Weaver made the game safe when his long range effort went through a crowd of players and caught the home keeper off guard leaving the final score 2-4.

A good final performance against a Newcastle side who had gone 9 games undefeated before the game. There were a few good performances, Kevin Jones looking good in defence, Sam Mayglothling took control of the centre of the park but my man of the match goes to Mike Havard who even had a cameo centre forward appearance.
