The Saints progressed to the 3rd round of the Faw trophy after a 3-0 win against Nelson Caviliers in a scrappy game which never really got going.
The home side were on top from the off but struggled to string any passes together and only had a Kevin Jones snap shot to show for after the first 15 minutes. It was Nelson who nearly opened the scoring in the 16th minute when their strikers first time shot hit the side netting.
Brian Dyer shot over the bar after being set up by Josh Wisniewski, the next chance fell to Sam Mayglothling in the 24th minute after a Kev Jones long throw was headed down by Wisniewski but the midfielder saw his shot well saved.
The opening goal arrived on 34 minutes, Gavin Williams sent in a floating free kick which Wisniewski again headed down into the path of Mayglothling only this time the midfielders volley hit the back of the net. 1-0. Just 4 minutes later it was 2-0 when Captain Phil Davies released the impressive Williams down the left, the winger sent in an inch perfect cross to the head of K.Jones at the back post the striker making no mistake from 6 yards out 2-0. On the stroke of half time The Saints went to sleep at a corner luckily the Nelson midfielders shot went iches wide of Prices goal. ht 2-0
The second half was simular to the first with The Saints on top and Nelson looking to counter attack, on the hour mark the game was pretty much over as a contest after the goal of the game was scored, keeper Steve Price sent a kick out of his hands to K.Jones who headed the ball to strike partner Wisniewski, he then returned the pass sending Jones through on goal who finished well from 16 yards out.
The rest of the game was scrappy with Jones going close for his hat trick and Williams just blasting over the bar after a Mayglothling free kick. ft 3-0
Not the best of viewing especially after last weeks performance but on the plus side we’re in the 3rd round and I don’t think we picked up any new injuries. It was good to see Phil Davies starting a game after so long out and Sam Powell also got 20 minutes after being out for several weeks with ankle problems.
