League Champions.

The Saints Reserves are ‘The Mid Wales South’ League Champions after beating nearest rivals Brecon Northcote 2-0.

A goal in the 12th minute from Matty Tong who turned his marker inside out before hitting a shot past the ‘Cote’ keeper from 12 yards to put us 1-0 up. Tong then turned provider by slipping a pass to Kiegan Powell who hit a low shot past the diving keeper for a 2-0 lead.

Tom Bevan in our goal made several saves throughout to keep the score at 2-0 and bring the title to Forest Road.

This was always going to be a tense affair. Northcote had to win and force us to play our last game against Knighton away with all the pressure suddenly on us. The Northcote players were keen to come and watch us as well… Well that won’t be necessary now due to our impressive victory.

This was our forth meeting of the season and we had learnt from our mistake in the Hay Invitation Cup that we mustn’t start slowly and give them the upper hand. Our League Cup semi final victory  three days later showed that if we pressed them from the start and throughout that we could edge this biggest of games. And we did just that.

Right from kick off we pressured them, creating a few good early chances as well. Yet what we really needed was an early goal to really pile the pressure on and Matty Tong’s opener was stunning. As was Kiegan Powell’s goal a few minutes later, not a bad time to score your first goal of the season.

HT 2:0

It had been a perfect first half performance but we always knew that an early Northcote goal would have altered things. They attacked time and time again but our defence was solid and goalkeeper Tom Bevan was excellent when needed. We rode our luck a bit in what became an increasingly scrappy game but maybe it seemed like it was meant to be our day! Yet we couldn’t really relax until that final whistle was blown and when it was then the partying could begin.

To win at home against our nearest challengers was the perfect end to what has been a brilliant season. Thank you to everyone who watched yesterday.

Man of the Match: Tom Bevan
