Hay St Mary’s FC Reserves lifted the Pip Samuel (Electrical) Mid Wales (South) League Cup following a 4-0 victory over Newcastle Football Club at Llanandras Park this afternoon. Sponsors man of the match, Saints’ captain Darren Horrigan, led by example for the Forest Road club by netting a cup-final hat-trick in the Bank Holiday sunshine.

The Saints opened the scoring in the seventh minute after Ricky Lynes drove towards goal and saw his low shot parried by Newcastle custodian Phil Williams but Horrigan was on hand to tuck the loose ball into the net. The Breconshire club doubled their lead 16 minutes later when Jack Biggs flicked on a free-kick into the Newcastle penalty area and Horrigan was afforded the time and space to turn and shoot past Williams. The Hay St Mary’s captain then completed his treble 10 minutes into the second-half when he was played through on goal before maintaining his composure to lift the ball over the advancing Williams. The scoring was completed eight minutes later when Biggs beat Williams to a Curtis Bounds cross and head home at the near post. The Saints nearly went nap with five minutes remaining on referee Nigel Mathias’ clock but substitute Robin Davies was unable to convert his opportunity from the spot. However, the Forest Road men had done enough by then to ensure that it would be Darren Horrigan lifting the trophy following the final whistle.
