Away Win

The Saints Reserve team won 0-2 tonight at current champions Rhayader Town Reserves.

Matty Tong opened the scoring in the 74th minute, Matt Turrell added the second in the 80th after a dominant second half performance.

The Reserves pulled off another outstanding result last night against Rhayader Reserves. After a fairly even first half, where the conditions played the biggest part, the score line was 0-0. They hit the bar whilst we had a handful of chances but failed to convert.

There was nothing to say at halftime, other than to keep playing football and pressing. The pitch only got muddier but we kept our feet and began playing the far better football. It was then a well-earned goal that eventually came. It was a good run and through ball by Keigan Powell in to Matty Tong’s feet but there was still much to do. Thankfully Matty, who is growing in strength and skill, danced past a player and brilliantly chipped the outrushing goalkeeper.

Still We weren’t done, we pressed rather than sat back, the best antidote to secure a win.

Sure enough, after a fantastic free kick delivered by Jamie Howard, Matty Turrell snuck in at the back with a great run and headed the ball in. That’s his third in as many games, not bad for a centre back!

Yet this wasn’t really a game about individuals, as everyone stood up and stood out. If anyone deserved a man of the match it would have to go to James Eckley for his robust performance and tracking a very talentented number 5 all round the pitch. Onwards and upwards.
